1923 was a year of crisis: occupation of the Ruhr, passive resistance, inflation, supply crisis, emergency laws, coup attempts from both the right and the left. Tucholsky had withdrawn from current journalism, doubting the effectiveness of his previous efforts. On March 1, he took a position as a bank clerk at the banking house Bett, Simon & Co. He wrote to Emil Jannings at the end of the year that he was no longer involved in politics. This led to the creation of sketches of the times, small glosses, satires, reviews, and songs for the apolitical cabaret "Die Gondel." He describes his own funeral ("Requiem"), and at the turn of the year, he writes a wistful text about a bust of Voltaire, expressing the hope that reason will one day prevail. The year 1924 was quite different. In April, Tucholsky moved to Paris as a correspondent for Weltbühne and Vossische Zeitung.
