Adam and Thomas are surprised when they unexpectedly meet in the forest. Their mothers have hidden the boys there because it became too dangerous in the ghetto. Now the two nine-year-olds must learn to cope in nature: they get to know the animals of the forest, build a protective nest high in the tree, and gather wild fruits. However, the horrors of war and persecution are never far away: at night they hear gunshots, and once they come across an injured man. The well-read Thomas and the resourceful, traditionally raised Adam must learn that they can only survive together - believing in their friendship, the magic of nature, and their imagination. The only outside help comes from the little maid Mina, who secretly provides for the boys - a saint of action. But as the rescuing Red Army draws closer, the nights in the forest grow colder, and Mina also finds herself in danger.
