"Guignol's Band II" is set in the criminal underworld of London during World War I and continues the story of the novel "Guignol's Band," which was published in German in 1985. "Guignol's Band II" is a wild orgy and a frenzied bacchanal, where a fourteen-year-old virgin is raped in a pub, a mythomaniac dervish and demon conjurer raves at Piccadilly Circus, and gas-mad inventors skin each other alive – a true "time in hell," where every episode spirals out of control, escalates into madness, and must end in catastrophe. Yet, against the horrors of this nightmare, laughter prevails, as it does in no other of Céline's novels. Long sequences are filled with great comedy and longing.
