Product details

Hannah Arendt was an enthusiastic letter writer throughout her life, engaging in intense exchanges with her companions. One of these correspondences has only now been discovered: the one with the political scientist and publicist Dolf Sternberger, whose witness she was – still as "Hannah Stern, unemployed." After the war, the two began writing to each other, now between New York, where the emigrant soon achieved worldwide fame, and Heidelberg, where Dolf Sternberger was seeking a path in the post-war society of the Federal Republic. Their letters are full of surprising insights and brimming with spirit and wit. Can the restorative Federal Republic be characterized more beautifully than by Arendt: "I didn't like the good old days even when they were 25 years younger"? Udo Bermbach, who knew both, sheds light on the biographical and historical contexts in a detailed introduction and numerous comments. The two correspondents shared a deep, free exchange of ideas, which the reader is now invited to partake in for the first time.
