Product details

Klaus Mann - 75th Anniversary of Death in May 2024 - embodies the tumultuous first half of the 20th century like few others, as a flamboyant bohemian and great writer. Thomas Medicus accompanies Klaus Mann (1906-1949) through the stages of his very modern life, from his sheltered childhood in Munich to his career as a dandy in the Weimar Republic, which fostered homosexual emancipation, and finally to his political exile in Europe and the USA. Klaus Mann was always traveling, wandering between continents, and publishing in an unrestrained flow of writing. It was an extreme life, always overshadowed by drugs and excesses, as well as a desire for death from an early age. Ultimately, he returned to Germany in 1945 as an American GI, facing dark final years until his suicide in Cannes. In his extensive biography, Thomas Medicus recounts this improbable life and explores his obsessions and driving forces. The friction with his father, political struggles and romances, and the close relationship with his sister Erika. A brilliant reassessment of this sparkling writer and interpreter of his era, which emerges here as an impressive historical panorama.
