Twenty years after his internationally acclaimed book "The Book of Memories," Péter Nádas presented another magnum opus. When "Parallel Stories" was published in Hungary in 2005, it was hailed as a "War and Peace of the 21st century." In 1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, student Döhring discovers a corpse while jogging in Berlin's Tiergarten. This criminal scene marks the beginning of the novel, which simultaneously opens a wide-ranging search for a dark family history, its guilt, and complicity. A second main thread is the story of the Budapest family Lippay-Lehr and their friends, whose personal fates are intertwined with Hungarian and German history. The historical markers include the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the post-revolutionary period, the Hungarian National Day on March 15, 1961, and, in retrospect, the deportation of Hungarians.
