The absent-minded Professor Timofey Pnin is a lonely individualist deeply disturbed by the American way of life. The immigrant appears to those around him as a comical failure. However, his dignity, seriousness, and personality make that very environment seem ridiculous: it fails in his presence. Everything that happens to Pnin endears this old-fashioned Russian scholar to us.
