Solsbüll is a small town in northern Schleswig-Holstein, deep in the provinces, yet a place where the significant events of the 20th century have left their mark. Here, the life stories of three generations intertwine, embodied in three men who share the same name: Gustav Hasse, as grandfather, father, and son. While the first two fall in the world wars, the third Gustav, born in 1941, survives and grows up in a midwife household. The fate of two women, his grandmother Anne and his adoptive mother Gret, reflects the times: after the lost First World War, the two midwives experience the rise and flourishing of National Socialism and its catastrophic end. They witness opportunism and cowardice among friends and neighbors, and experience betrayal, hatred, and violence.
