The world premiere of Peter Turrini's dramatic debut Rozznjogd in 1971 at the Vienna Volkstheater turned into a theatrical scandal. The story of two young people who have their first rendezvous on a garbage dump, pass the time hunting rats, and ultimately, out of a deep-seated disgust for civilization, gradually shed their clothes, their learned phrases, and their morals in a wild game, has today secured its place in the repertoire of theaters from Vienna and New York to Tel Aviv, São Paulo, and Seoul. Sauschlachten also parodies the expectations of the folk play and, at its premiere in 1972 at the Munich Kammerspiele, stirred just as much controversy. A peasant son who refuses to engage with language increasingly finds himself caught in the crossfire within his family.
