Rudolf Steiner engaged with Goethe's Faust poetry repeatedly over decades. For him, Faust represented the "man of modern times," who has left behind the pious faith of the Middle Ages and seeks to explore the world with an unrelenting thirst for knowledge in the spirit of modernity. However, Rudolf Steiner never aimed to approach the multifaceted fabric of Goethe's poetry through literary scholarly or systematic interpretations; instead, he sought to stimulate perspectives that could reveal the deep underlying and background aspects, the spiritual dimension, and the spiritual realism of the poetry. Volume 1 includes selected texts and lectures by Rudolf Steiner, in which he reflects on fundamental motifs of the Faust poetry and elaborates on the inner arc of the entire work, which simultaneously highlights the different character of the two parts of the work - Faust I.
