Agricultural economist Tony Rinaudo is revolutionizing reforestation in Africa with his method (FMNR). This method is based on utilizing existing tree stumps and roots. By selectively cutting weak shoots, the growth of the plants is encouraged. The method is now successfully applied in countries such as Niger, Ethiopia, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Where thorny bushes once stood or the desert was constantly expanding ten years ago, farmers are now reforesting large areas of land thanks to this method. In the Humbo region of southern Ethiopia alone, 2,700 hectares of land (approximately 3,800 football fields) have been greened. While many regions in Africa rely on food aid, the villages in Humbo are now producing surplus maize. The book tells the rocky path to the success of this method.
