The new ferry port of Sassnitz, which was opened in 1986 after four years of construction on the beach of Neu Mukran for rail ferry traffic with the then Soviet Klaipeda, has also been serving traffic with the Swedish Trelleborg on the traditional "Königslinie" as well as with the Danish island of Bornholm since 1998. Infrastructure projects like this new port, as well as the massive Rügen Bridge, which was built from 2004 to 2007 parallel to the Rügendamm as a second crossing of the Strelasund, are new to Rügen on this scale and have implications that are not yet foreseeable. In this respect, they illustrate the significant - and not entirely positive - changes that have occurred in Rügen's history since the profound upheaval of 1945. An overview of this will be provided in the final part of the five-part work on Rügen's history from its beginnings to the present day.
