That linguistic practice is a social practice is taken for granted in the language philosophy of the 20th century. But how exactly should we conceptualize the relationship between individual speakers and the community they form as speakers of a language within a philosophical theory of linguistic meaning? Are speakers as such necessarily dependent on the existence of other speakers or a language community to which they belong? In what ways are they determined by the linguistic norms of a community? In what ways do they determine these norms? And in what ways do they determine one another?
