The first "Grote Mandränke" in 1362 not only led to the downfall of the North Frisian town of Rungholt, but it has also captivated people along the Schleswig-Holstein west coast for centuries. Various, often contradictory archaeological research approaches have emerged, which are now undergoing critical examination with the aim of achieving a scientifically grounded objectification. This topic describes the historical beginnings of North Friesland and places them in an international context. Topics discussed include the surveying of the Rungholt area, everyday life in Rungholt based on partly unpublished and partly newly evaluated finds, issues of economy and long-distance trade, including connections to the medieval Hanse, questions regarding churches and church organization, as well as the reception of Rungholt in literature.
