In the early years of his painting after 1945, Rupprecht Geiger drew on the tradition of the Blue Rider to promote abstract painting through image and word. Together with artists like Willi Baumeister and Fritz Winter, he founded the group ZEN 49 to practice a deliberate departure from nature imitation in non-representational painting. From the very beginning, color was at the center of his work. His compositional vocabulary included the circle as a representation of the sun, the rectangle, and the square. Geiger also made a name for himself with internationally recognized art in architecture starting in the 1950s. In 2002, he represented Germany at the XXV Bienal de São Paulo with a spatial work consisting of four large-format canvases. The resurgence of 1960s aesthetics in art and design created a connection to Geiger's early works, which he began in 1965.
