German-speaking writers, philosophers, and literary critics have sought creative engagement with Russian literature in various ways since the 18th century, with authors such as Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Chekhov, Mandelstam, Mayakovsky, and Yevtushenko. This not only had consequences for the works of individual authors like Rilke, Kafka, Brecht, and Christa Wolf, but also repeatedly led to paradigm shifts in German literary history, such as the emergence of the novel in Classical Modernism. The book also examines the mediating instances such as translators, publishers, and literary critics.
