Between the years of the Young Turk Revolution in 1908 and the outbreak of World War I, the Ottoman press in Istanbul saw active participation from Russian Muslim authors. In their contributions, they painted a dramatic picture of the situation of Muslims in the Tsarist Empire as an oppressed minority: a centuries-old policy of Russification and Christianization appeared to be working towards the complete displacement of Turkish Islam from Eurasia. In the name of religion and a shared Turkish heritage, they called for solidarity from the Ottomans. They consciously supported the process of late Ottoman awareness of their own Turkish identity. This study aims to reconstruct the Turkic-language press and communication space that developed before 1914 through the analysis of Ottoman and Russian-Turkish periodicals, as well as to uncover the nature and function of the Ottoman discovery of the Islamic and Turkish world in Russia and Central Asia.
