Our restless society needs nothing more urgently than healing interruptions and genuine time away from work, as the working world creeps into our evenings, weekends, and even vacations through mobile internet. The Mecklenburg pastor Tilman Jeremias not only enjoyed the blessings of the Sabbath during a nine-month sabbatical but also recognized the immensely important significance of the Sabbath in the Bible as the seventh day of creation and the center of the Ten Commandments. Jesus also upheld the Sabbath, but he opposed the Pharisees' legalistic constriction of it. For Judaism, the Sabbath is a central element of their religion. It is all the more incomprehensible how the church and Christian theology have forgotten, displaced, and reinterpreted the Sabbath. Therefore, it is high time to rediscover this great gift from God.
