The dialogue between God and man conducted from a geographical elevation suggests a greater closeness to God. This also explains the privileged status of high-altitude sanctuaries. In the history of the Sacro Monte of Varese published in 1614 by Cesare Tettamantio, a multitude of "biblical" holy mountains are mentioned to make the pilgrimage site above Varese appear more valuable and gracious.
