Sade, Fourier, and Loyola have not been assembled in the same book out of a desire to provoke, but because all three were classifiers and founders of language: the vilified writer established a language of erotic pleasure, the utopian philosopher a language of social happiness, and the holy Jesuit a language of invoking God. To invent signs and not, as we all do, merely consume them paradoxically means entering the realm of that retrospective meaning that represents the signifier; in short, it means practicing a way of writing. Therefore, this book does not focus on the content of the writings of these three authors, but rather treats Sade, Fourier, and Loyola as formulators, inventors of writing styles, text operators.
