Adverse circumstances and the disdain of society lead a person to become a criminal; yet, he maintains a sense of honor that ultimately drives him to accuse himself. In "The Ghost Seer," Schiller references the contemporary scandal surrounding the impostor and spirit medium Count Cagliostro.
