Set in the northwest of Scotland and by Lake Constance, Anna Stern's third novel "For You Are Wild Like the Waves of the Sea" explores the complex relationship between Ava Garcia and Paul Faber. Stern delivers an impressive novel about dealing with grief, the inevitability of the past, and the deceptive authenticity of memories. She narrates the long history of Ava Garcia and her family, contrasting it with Paul Faber's present. While Ava struggles for her inner balance and wrestles with the decision of whether to keep her unborn child, Paul Faber fights for her love and a future together. Interspersed throughout are notes, photos, sketches, and letters from Ava Garcia, as well as three short stories by the protagonist Patrick Swann. These elements open up another fascinating interpretive space and further develop the themes.
