The Viennese lawyer Dr. Karl Kaser left behind an extensive body of documentary photographs, which was only rescued from oblivion a few years ago by his grandson Hermann Kaser. At the heart of this photographic life’s work is the human being in their social environment. The large-format images gathered in this volume depict hay harvesting and early threshing machines, manual road construction, and woodcutters by the fire, as well as the first day-trippers and summer vacationers with bicycles and skis or on butterfly hunts. The focus is on people, whether working in the blacksmith's forge or by the hearth, playing cards in the tavern, enjoying their first bath, or attending church. It is a touching journey into rural Austria more than a hundred years ago.
