Product details

This biography of the doctor Dr. Josef Klostermann (1814-1875) is significant for understanding the literary work of his son, the 'Poet of the Bohemian Forest' Karl Klostermann, as it is dedicated in many places to the memory of the father and his stories. To create as authentic a portrayal of his life as possible, two relevant documents have been combined into one: the text fragment by his son Karl Klostermann (translated into German by Helfried Reischl) and the comprehensive manuscript by his granddaughter Anna Jelinek titled 'Dr. Josef Klostermann - the Life of a Doctor in the Bohemian Forest'. Both authors sensitively and compassionately depict the life of the father and grandfather, who worked as a doctor in the Bohemian Forest in the 19th century and was characterized by his noble disposition, love for humanity, social and democratic values, integrity, and unwavering sense of justice. His professional career unfolded as a seemingly endless series of changing and painful life circumstances. For nearly his entire life, the farmer's son from Schlösselwald near Rehberg in the Bohemian Forest and later doctor Josef Klostermann maintained close ties with the glassmaker family Abele from Hurkenthal and Deffernik. The sons Christoph, Wilhelm, and Ferdinand of the great mirror glass entrepreneur Georg Christoph Abele were his brotherly friends, and their cousin Lotte became his wife. Thus, this book proves to be a kind of Klostermann-Abele family legacy.
