Product details

A reading sample can be found at. Fred Stein is one of the pioneers of 35mm photography in the 1930s and 1940s. The photographic oeuvre of this latecomer is a moving and dynamic testament to the history of the 20th century; he created impressive views of cities and people. Born in 1909 as the son of a rabbi in Dresden, the committed socialist was forced to leave his hometown after the rise of the National Socialists in 1933. In the hardship of flight and emigration, his outstanding talent as a sensitive portrait and street photographer was revealed. The list of those he portrayed reads like a "Who’s Who" of the 20th century: Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, Willy Brandt, Arnold Zweig, Egon Erwin Kisch, Bertolt Brecht, Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dalí, Martin Buber, Thomas Mann. His photographs are characterized by deep humanity.
