Sarajevo is associated with a variety of connotations: the city of the assassination in 1914, the city of the Winter Olympics in 1984, the besieged city from 1992 to 1996, a city of tolerance and a city of hatred, the Damascus of the North, the Jerusalem of Europe, and Little Jerusalem. The history of Sarajevo is largely a story of destruction and reconstruction, repeated destruction and renewed reconstruction. It is a story of multiculturalism and interculturality. The centuries-long coexistence, collaboration, and conflict among Muslims, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Jews characterize Sarajevo like few other cities in Europe.
