A special kind of tour through Leipzig's city center. Like a second, private pathway system reserved exclusively for pedestrians, Leipzig's passages and courtyards weave through the old town districts parallel to the established network of streets and alleys. In their finest examples, they embody architecture of European significance. The "flagship" among them, the Mädler Passage, can be considered the number one among the preserved German passages from the time before World War I. In addition to the 26 passages and courtyards that shape the city today, the urban planning situation before World War II is also depicted. Many legendary courtyards, such as Aeckerleins Hof, Hohmanns Hof, or Kochs Hof, were lost in the bombing raid from December 3 to 4, 1943, and can now only be experienced through historical images.
