One Hundred and One Days on My Horse and an Excursion to the Island of Maddalena. The author Marie Espérance von Schwartz (1818-1899) was a writer of German descent and British nationality. She was a friend of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Franz Liszt and became known primarily in the field of travel and memoir literature. This work by the author, which arose from her relationship with Garibaldi, describes her journey on horseback from Rome to Lucerne to visit her brother and a visit to Garibaldi on Caprera. She was actively engaged in animal welfare across Europe. In Chania, she founded a veterinary hospital for horses and donkeys, and countless stray dogs were fed daily. In numerous brochures in many languages, she sought supporters for animal protection and worked together with them.
