The author Georg Scherer (1824-1909) was a writer and editor of folk songs, fables, sayings, and riddles. He was a highly regarded lyricist and collector during his lifetime. His main significance lies in folk song research and the publication of important collections and illustrated children's books. For the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, he published the collection "Old and New Children's Songs" in 1849 with the collaboration of artists such as Moritz von Schwind, Ludwig Richter, Wilhelm von Kaulbach, and Franz von Pocci. He maintained correspondence with Eduard Mörike and Theodor Storm. Since 1881, he lived as a freelance writer in Munich. This volume is illustrated with approximately 80 black and white images based on original drawings by Ludwig Richter and Moritz von Schwind, among others. It is a reprint of the original edition from 1849.
