The Dresden May Uprising from May 3 to May 9, 1849, also known as the Dresden May Revolution, was an attempt to overthrow King Friedrich August II of Saxony and establish a Saxon Republic during the Imperial Constitution Campaign towards the end of the German Revolution of 1848/1849. Prussian and Saxon troops under Colonel Friedrich von Waldersee suppressed the uprising on the fighting days of May 7, 8, and 9. The leaders Tzschirner, Heubner, and Bakunin initially escaped. Similarly, the then court conductor Richard Wagner, who was friends with Bakunin, as well as the architect Gottfried Semper, who was friends with Wagner, and Friedrich Herman Semmig managed to flee the city. A state of siege was declared for Dresden, but it was not enforced. Most of the fallen were young people, who formed the core of the fighters.
