Product details

Camillo Sitte (1843 - 1903) was an Austrian architect, urban planner, urban design and cultural theorist, as well as a painter. With his internationally acclaimed book "City Building According to Its Artistic Principles," he was one of the first authors to engage theoretically and critically with urban planning in the industrial age. Due to his architectural and aesthetic proposals for urban design, Sitte is regarded as a re-founder of the art of city building. In 1889, with the publication of his book "City Building According to Its Artistic Principles," he gained significant recognition beyond the borders of Austria-Hungary. The richly illustrated book introduced the concept of urban design into the discussion and demonstrated, through examples from ancient, medieval, and baroque cities (the School of the Ancients), possibilities for artistic urban planning.
