The Bastei in the Saxon Switzerland - a commemorative publication for the 100th anniversary of its entry into history on May 29, 1897, by Prof. Dr. Lehmann (the Lehmann Gorge along the Rauenstein Ridge Path bears his name). Illustrated with 54 black and white images. The Bastei (305 m above sea level) is a rock formation with a viewing platform in the Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe, located in the municipality of Lohmen between the spa town of Rathen and the city of Wehlen. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Saxon Switzerland. From the Bastei, the narrow rock ridge drops steeply 194 m down to the Elbe. It offers a wide view of the Elbe Valley and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The viewpoint is first mentioned in travel literature in 1798 in a publication by Christian August Gottlob Eberhard. Initially, the Bastei was relatively easily accessible only from Wehlen and Lohmen.
