History of the Piano - from its origins to the most modern forms around 1868. Illustrated with 38 black and white images. Stringed keyboard instruments are historically traced back to the monochord. Several monochords evolved into the two-handed played raft or tube zither. From this, in antiquity, both keyboard-played organs and various plucked, struck, or bowed string instruments emerged, including the psaltery. By adding a keyboard, the clavichord (where tangents fixed to the keys strike the strings) developed from the monochord and psaltery in the late Middle Ages, and during the Renaissance, the harpsichord and its variants, such as the clavicytherium, spinet, and virginal, where sound is produced by plucking the strings with a plectrum, were created.
