Product details

The art historian and founder of Saxon monument preservation, Cornelius Gurlitt, describes the city of Meissen, its suburbs, the freedom from taxes, and the water castle in this volume from 1917. The Meissen Cathedral and Albrechtsburg on the left bank of the Elbe shape the silhouette of Meissen. Construction of the cathedral began around 1250, and the two distinctive cathedral towers were only completed in 1909, after the west front with its two towers, built starting in 1315, had been destroyed by lightning in 1547. From 1470, under Arnold of Westphalia, Albrechtsburg was built as the first German castle. Initially intended as a residence for the two ruling princes, it was never used for that purpose and remained empty. From 1710 until the mid-19th century, Albrechtsburg served as the seat of the Meissen porcelain factory. Illustrated with numerous images.
