The history of the violin and violin making. Caspar Tieffenbrucker (around 1514 - 1571) is considered one of the most significant lute and violin makers of his time. He worked in Füssen, Lyon, Bologna, and Rosshaupten. Tieffenbrucker is regarded as the founder of the French lute-making school and was likely one of the first violin makers to produce the violin in the form commonly used today. In 1558, he received citizenship in Lyon. Violins by Caspar Tieffenbrucker are now rarely encountered; most known instruments are considered replicas of Jean Baptiste Vuillaume's from the 19th century. The Bremen violin maker Hermann August Drögemeyer describes a comprehensive history of violin making in this volume. Additionally, the work contains an extensive directory of violin makers from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. Reprint of the original edition, 3rd edition from 1903.
