Antti Amatus Aarne (1867-1925) was a Finnish fairy tale researcher. Aarne studied in Russia between 1893 and 1898 and subsequently was a language teacher and principal at Russian high schools. He received his doctorate in 1908 with a thesis entitled Comparative Fairy Tale Research (present here). From 1911 he taught as a lecturer in Finnish and comparative folk poetry research at the University of Helsinki, and from 1922 as an associate professor. Aarne, together with Julius as well as Kaarle Krohn, is considered the founder of the geographical-historical method, also called the Finnish School. In 1910 he published a typology of the fairy tale under the title Verzeichnis der Märchentypen (Index of Fairy Tale Types) with the help of specialist comrades, which was substantially revised and supplemented first in 1928 and then again in 1961 by the American Stith Thompson as the Aarne-Thompson Index. The comparative research of fairy tales was limited by the brothers Grimm.
