Product details

In the 17th century, the Netherlands was one of the most powerful nations in Europe. During the Golden Age of the prosperous merchant society, painting flourished exceptionally, exploring new themes. Genre painting, with its focus on everyday events, emerged from the societal and cultural values of the financially strong bourgeoisie and simultaneously became a reflection of it. This study focuses on a specific theme of genre painting: the life of the Dutch bourgeois woman. For the first time in European art history, the everyday life of women receives detailed visual appreciation. The material is thematically organized into areas such as household and family, leisure and free time, partnership and love. Against the backdrop of societal conditions, a multifaceted image of the bourgeois woman as mother, wife, housewife, partner, and lover becomes apparent, revealing how factors such as urbanization, family change, and the influential impact of Calvinist religiosity have led to a reevaluation of the woman's role, allowing her as the mistress of the bourgeois household to become a worthy subject of art.
