Year after year, countless tourists travel to Crete. Hardly any of them know anything about the German occupation and the war crimes on the island. Many wounds have healed, but the sorrow still casts long shadows. The warm hospitality of the Cretans and their willingness to forgive and reconcile should not lead to a hasty turning of the page on this dark chapter of German-Greek history. Few of those responsible for the long shadows have acknowledged their accountability. A new Europe can only be built if the underlying issues are explored and freed from toxic legacies. The author connects encounters with those affected and the engagement with their own history through unpublished Nazi documents and West German court records to create a diary-like text collage.
