Product details

Hasnain Kazim paints the immigration of his parents to Germany. His father, as a young man, responds to an advertisement from a German shipping company seeking sailors, leaves his Pakistani homeland, and is trained as a seaman in a completely unfamiliar country. The desire to become a captain leads him and his family—by now a son has been born—to the Old Country in Hollern-Twielenfleth. While friendship and trust flourish quickly on a personal level, it takes a long time at the official level. It is not until many years later (1990) that the Kazims receive German citizenship through naturalization. Hasnain Kazim was born in 1974 in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, and grew up in Hollern-Twielenfleth in the Old Country, just outside Hamburg, as well as in Karachi, Pakistan. In Stade, he attended the Vincent-Lübeck-Gymnasium and developed a passion for journalism as a teenager. He gained his first experiences at the Stader Tageblatt, and after studying political science, he wrote for various outlets, including Heilbronner Stimme and the news agency dpa. In 2006, Kazim became an editor at SPIEGEL ONLINE, and from July 2009, he served as the South Asia correspondent for SPIEGEL ONLINE and SPIEGEL. Since 2013, he has been carrying out this role from Istanbul, where, in May 2014, he received death threats related to his reporting on the mining disaster in Soma. Shortly thereafter, Kazim had to leave Turkey and continued his work from Vienna. Today, he is a freelance author and journalist.
