Art usually takes place in cities; culture and urbanity go hand in hand. However, projects that can meet international quality standards for contemporary art are also emerging in the provinces, in rural areas, and in small villages. This publication highlights this for the first time in an overview. "Art and Village" includes 16 essays, around 20 short contributions, and a service section. Curators, authors, artists, historians, and sociologists write about the interventions of artists in villages in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The focus is on projects that often coincide with a temporary presence of artists in rural areas, where the diverse facets of village life are addressed. It also offers a look at legendary historical artist colonies and those in the agricultural production cooperatives of the former GDR.
