The biblical apocalypse has inspired the imagination of painters and illustrators for centuries with its narrative of the end of the world. The figurative-expressive monumental work "Bastokalypse" by M.S. Bastian and Isabelle L. continues this tradition. The artist duo, who met in the graphic design class at the Biel School of Design and have been collaborating since 2004, created a visual strip of 32 black-and-white paintings on canvas, measuring 51.2 meters in length and 1 meter in height: the print template for this unusual leporello. The Bastokalypse—a play on words combining "apocalypse" and "Bastian"—is a frieze of horror filled with allusions: ancient mythologies and modern images of terror, such as Picasso's Guernica or Art Spiegelman's mouse drawings, can be found alongside scenes of horror from graphic novels, trivial art, and mass media.
