Product details

The German artist Emmy Hennings (1885-1948) was a central founding figure of the Zurich Dada movement and a colorful personality: she performed as a poet, cabaret artist, and dancer, among other roles. In 1916, she opened the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich's Spiegelgasse with Hugo Ball, where Hans Arp, Tristan Tzara, Richard Huelsenbeck, Marcel Janco, and others participated. From there, Dada began its international triumph and developed into one of the most influential art movements of the 20th century. This new volume presents Hennings' multifaceted contribution to Dada with an unprecedented wealth of literary texts, documents, images, and photographs. For the first time, her unpublished manuscripts from the Dada period are fully reproduced. It also includes testimonies from contemporaries such as Julio Álvarez del Vayo, Hans Arp, Leonhard Frank, and Ferdinand Hardekopf.
