Product details

The two brothers, sculptor Ernst Gubler and painter Max Gubler, exchanged over 560 letters between 1914 and 1954, which are published in this edition in full and without text alterations. They illuminate the lives of two artists during the interwar period, particularly from 1919 to 1926, when they sought their paths during their years of study and travel with stops in Weimar, Munich, and Berlin, and from 1930 to 1937, when Max Gubler lived in Paris. The correspondence provides insights into their personal development as well as the cultural and social contexts of that time, including their perceptions of important exhibitions - Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Rodin, the Venice Biennale, and the Milan Triennale. We learn about visits to fellow artists, for example, in the studio of Aristide Maillol, as well as the encounters of the two artists with their contemporaries.
