Product details

The work of Ferdinand Gehr (1896-1996) is as present in public spaces as that of hardly any other Swiss artist of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the creator of more than 60 wall, ceiling, and stained glass paintings, sgraffito, and ceramics for churches, schools, and community centers is largely unknown to the public. Particularly, architects of the Swiss post-war modernism appreciated Gehr's reduced formal language and his unique sense of spatial relationships. With his ability to design sacred interiors in harmony with the architecture, Gehr created works that rank among the most outstanding produced in Switzerland in this field in recent decades. This new, richly illustrated monograph now focuses for the first time on Gehr's public commissions. The most important works in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Portugal are presented.
