Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), the most significant Swiss painter at the turn of the 20th century, broke with the artistic conventions of his time. As the creator of impressive landscapes and portraits, as well as monumental historical and symbolist figure paintings, he produced a body of work that garnered international attention even during his lifetime. The approximately 500 portraits and 50 self-portraits that Hodler created from 1872 to 1917 account for about a quarter of his output. They are among the strongest representations of humanity in Swiss art and reflect both Hodler's diverse encounters and his life experiences. The Swiss Institute for Art Research SIK-ISEA has been working on a catalog of Ferdinand Hodler's complete works since 1998. Following Volume 1 on landscapes, Volume 2 now presents the portraits: three introductory essays and the catalog section.
