On the 100th anniversary of Ferdinand Hodler's death on May 19, 2018, the final fourth volume of the biography and documents for the catalogue raisonné of his paintings is being published. It offers a critical and contemporary biography of the artist, reflecting the latest research. This includes a review of traditional narratives that, as with nearly every famous artist, have solidified into legends surrounding Hodler. The book documents the events in Hodler's life as well as important phases of his artistic development, from his apprenticeship in Thun to his training in Geneva and his competition successes. It illustrates the phenomenal career Hodler achieved as an exhibiting artist in Switzerland, France, Austria, and Germany, as well as the extraordinary commissions he received in Switzerland and Germany. However, the volume also shows that Hodler was not able to realize all of his major projects.
