Product details

Günther Wizemann, born in 1953 in Graz, has lived in Switzerland since 1960. After his training at the then School of Applied Arts in Zurich in the 1970s, he is now active as a painter and conceptual artist. Through his study of Russian modernism, he questioned what could still be painted after Malevich and Rodchenko. Mario Merz's neon work "che fare?" from 1968, or as Barnett Newman put it, "What to paint?" also became programmatic for Wizemann. The work cycle "The Black Garden," created between 2003 and 2013, is a possible answer to that question. The 43 paintings, made with oil and synthetic resin on canvas, emerged from time-intensive painting processes and a multitude of layers of color that construct a pictorial space both inward and outward. The texts of this monograph place Wizemann's largest body of work to date within the context of art history.
