The former Schönthal Monastery in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, first documented in 1145, was plundered and devastated during the Reformation. The buildings, including the monastery church, which features a Romanesque west portal of national significance, served profane purposes for nearly 500 years thereafter. The entire complex, along with its grounds, was acquired by John Schmid in 1986, carefully restored over the years, and transformed into one of the most beautiful cultural meeting places in Switzerland. International and Swiss artists have created site-specific works for the enchanting landscape park at Schönthal. Before creating their works, they familiarized themselves with the monastery, its history, and the surrounding landscape. Currently, 31 works by 22 artists line the paths and trails. This richly illustrated book showcases the artworks in dialogue with nature and brings the development of this place to life.
