Product details

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Ferdinand Hodler's death in 1918, Bern, his birthplace, and Geneva, his place of death, jointly pay tribute to the artist. An exhibition and a accompanying publication present his simple, clear, and impactful theory of parallelism that shapes his work. Hodler sees and paints a nature and a world organized in parallel outlines. It is a visual and sensory experience that nourishes his compositions: Hodler recognizes parallel lines in mountains, clouds, forests, women, men, and personalities, and depicts them accordingly. He radicalizes this world order, systematizes it, and constructs his images in balanced and harmonious macrocosms. This interplay of parallels between his works, which respond to and complement each other, is expanded, expressing the parallelism of feelings.
