Product details

Whether it's color portraits of Che Guevara or a report on the last headhunters in the Ecuadorian jungle: the photographer couple Margrit (*1929) and Ernst Baumann (*1928) traveled the world and published their photographs in magazines and newspapers such as Stern, Berner Tagblatt, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and Das gelbe Heft. A focus of their life's work—and this richly illustrated double monograph—is their journey along the Pan-American Highway. From 1957 to 1959, dozens of reports, numerous portraits, and landscape images were created, as well as what is likely the first color film about the legendary route. The book presents findings from their photo archive—many images shown for the first time in their original format—as well as facsimile prints from magazines. It includes a biographical essay by historian and writer Wilfried Meichtry, a contribution from photo historian Markus Schürpf, and texts about the images by Nadine Olone.
